Client: Self-employed graphic designer, age 38 Tax Liability: $47,000 (2022 and 2023 tax years combined) Notice Received: CP504 — Intent to levy state tax refund
The Situation
Our client had been self-employed for three years and had not made estimated tax payments. By the time she filed her 2022 and 2023 returns, she owed $38,000 in tax plus $9,000 in penalties and interest — a total of $47,000. She ignored the CP14, CP501, and CP503 notices because she simply couldn’t afford to pay.
When she received CP504, she realized the IRS was serious. She was expecting a $4,200 state tax refund, which the IRS would seize. More importantly, she was terrified of losing her income to wage garnishment if the case escalated to LT11.
What Global Gate Did
Week 1: We immediately contacted the IRS on her behalf, establishing ourselves as her authorized representative (using Form 2848, Power of Attorney). We confirmed the balance and ensured she was current on all filing obligations.
Week 2: We prepared a full financial analysis using Form 433-A (Collection Information Statement), documenting her monthly income, expenses, assets, and liabilities. Her monthly net income was $4,800, with allowable monthly expenses of $4,200 — leaving only $600 of disposable income.
Week 3: Based on our analysis, we determined she was an excellent candidate for a Partial Payment Installment Agreement (PPIA). Her Reasonable Collection Potential (RCP) showed she could not pay the full $47,000 within the remaining Collection Statute Expiration Date (CSED) timeframe.
Week 4: We submitted a PPIA proposal to the IRS: $600/month for 72 months, totaling $43,200 — with the remaining balance forgiven when the CSED expired.
Outcome: – ✅ IRS accepted the installment agreement at $550/month (they adjusted one expense category) – ✅ No state tax refund was levied (we intervened in time) – ✅ The case never escalated to LT11 – ✅ Client avoided wage garnishment, bank levy, and tax lien – ✅ Approximately $8,400 owing taxes will be forgiven when the CSED expires
Total cost of Global Gate’s services: $3,500 — saving the client from a potential $47,000 crisis.
Timeline: 4 weeks from first consultation to IRS acceptance.
