Receive the IRS Decision Letter
After the IRS makes an adverse determination, it sends a letter explaining the decision and your appeal rights. Key letters include:
- 30-Day Letter — Sent after an audit, giving you 30 days to appeal before the assessment becomes final
- Notice of Deficiency (90-Day Letter) — A statutory notice giving you 90 days to petition the U.S. Tax Court (this is not technically an appeal but an alternative to the administrative appeal process)
- Letter 1058 / LT11 / CP90 — Final Notice of Intent to Levy, triggering your right to a CDP hearing
- Letter 3172 — Notice of Federal Tax Lien filing, triggering your right to a CDP hearing
- Letter 1153 (with Form 2751) — Proposed TFRP assessment for payroll taxes
