Updated September 2026
An IRS wage levy stays on every paycheck until the balance is paid, you set up another arrangement, or the IRS releases it. The fastest fix is usually to get a qualifying payment plan in place or show economic hardship. The firms below can negotiate that for you. Global Gate Tax Relief tops our list for its flat upfront fee and licensed team. We also list national firms that publish their levy-release process, plus the free IRS and Taxpayer Advocate routes.
How we chose these firms
We checked each firm’s own website on 23 September 2026 against these criteria:
- Licensed representation: the firm says attorneys, enrolled agents or CPAs deal with the IRS.
- A published levy-release process or wage-garnishment service page.
- Fee transparency: flat fees, investigation fees or refund terms stated up front.
- Free consultation and national coverage.
- Public record: we left out firms with an open or recent FTC, state attorney general or court action that we found.
- Honesty about DIY: many levies can be released by calling the IRS yourself, so we say when you may not need anyone.

Global Gate Tax Relief
Best for: A flat, upfront fee and fast action on an active levy
Global Gate Tax Relief is a national IRS tax-resolution firm in Irvine, California, serving all 50 states remotely. Its team includes licensed tax attorneys, IRS enrolled agents and CPAs. On a wage garnishment case, it files Form 2848, pulls your IRS transcripts and negotiates the alternative that lets the levy be released. That may be an installment agreement or Currently Not Collectible status. In urgent levy cases it can often act within 24 to 72 hours of engagement, although the timing of any release depends on the IRS.
- Free consultation; if it takes the case, it quotes a flat fee before any work begins, does not bill hourly and does not add fees mid-case.
- It does not quote an outcome before reviewing your transcripts, and it tells small-balance callers how to fix things themselves.
- A published example: a self-employed client owing $47,000 got a $550/month installment agreement with no levy or garnishment. Individual results vary.

Victory Tax Lawyers
Best for: Attorney-led levy release with a stated same-day contact
Victory Tax Lawyers is based at 1100 S Robertson Blvd in Los Angeles. It is led by two founding attorneys and also lists a licensed enrolled agent. It says it represents taxpayers before the IRS in all 50 states. Its contact page says that once it holds your power of attorney it can contact the IRS the same day. It also says “releases typically come within 24 to 48 hours of submitting alternative arrangements”. That is the firm’s own claim, not an IRS standard.
- Free, confidential consultation.
- It says its fees are flat or hourly and never contingency.
- Its money-back guarantee refunds fees less a $2,500 administrative fee. The terms say any measurable benefit forecloses a refund, so read them before signing.
-
Clear Start Tax
Best for: Enrolled-agent representation with an investigation-first process
Clear Start Tax is based at 3 Park Plaza in Irvine, California, and says it serves taxpayers throughout the United States. Its FAQ says its enrolled agents are licensed and that everyone who communicates with the IRS for clients is certified to do so. It has a dedicated wage-garnishment relief page. Its process starts with an investigation of what you owe before any resolution is proposed.
- Free, no-obligation consultation.
- Its FAQ says there is “a small fee for our investigation service” once you proceed and that fees are based on the tax liability amount. No dollar figures are published, so ask for the total in writing.
-
Polston Tax
Best for: A large team with physical branch offices
Polston Tax is headquartered at 3550 W. Robinson Street in Norman, Oklahoma, and says it has been solving tax problems since 2001. Its about page describes a team of more than 100 tax attorneys, CPAs, tax preparers and case managers, with physical branch locations. It says it helps clients nationwide. Its wage-levy page explains how garnishments work and how the firm seeks release.
- Free initial consultation.
- No fees or guarantee terms are published.
- If you are appealing a levy notice, the Collection Due Process request uses IRS Form 12153, per IRS.gov.
-
Community Tax
Best for: Flat-fee investigation before any resolution work
Community Tax is based in Jacksonville, Florida. Its about page describes a team of attorneys, CPAs and enrolled agents. The homepage advertises a flat fee for the investigation phase for new clients: the firm reviews your IRS account before recommending a resolution. Its stop-wage-garnishment page walks through how the IRS decides how much to take from each paycheck and the main ways to stop it.
- Free consultation.
- The investigation fee amount is not published on the site, so ask for it and for the fee on the resolution phase before you sign.
-
Fortress Tax Relief
Best for: Larger balances handled by an attorney
Fortress Tax Relief is based in Bend, Oregon. It says every case is handled by a licensed tax relief attorney, and that it works on tax balances from $20,000 to $20 million. That makes it a better fit for larger cases than for small garnishments you could release yourself. Its articles on wage levies say its attorneys work to stop them.
- Free consultation.
- Its FAQ says that if you decide not to continue after the initial attorney consultation, 100% of any fees paid are refunded, subject to its intake paperwork.
- BBB profile read 23 Sep 2026: A+, accredited.

Do it yourself: call the IRS, or ask the Taxpayer Advocate (free)
Best for: Smaller balances and clear hardship cases
You do not need a paid firm to ask for a levy release. The IRS says to call the number on the levy or notice and explain your situation. Per IRS.gov, it must release a wage levy that is causing an immediate economic hardship, meaning you cannot meet basic, reasonable living expenses. It is also required to release a levy in several other cases. One is when you enter an installment agreement whose terms do not allow the levy to continue. If you owe $50,000 or less in combined tax, penalties and interest and have filed all required returns, you can apply for a payment plan online, per IRS.gov.
If the IRS is not resolving your case, the Taxpayer Advocate Service is free. Low Income Taxpayer Clinics can represent eligible taxpayers for free or a small fee.
How an IRS wage levy works in 2026
The IRS generally levies only after sending a Final Notice of Intent to Levy and Notice of Your Right to a Hearing at least 30 days beforehand, per IRS.gov. That notice is usually an LT11 or Letter 1058. Within those 30 days you can request a Collection Due Process hearing on Form 12153. A timely request generally stops the levy while Appeals considers your case. Miss it, and you can still ask for an equivalent hearing within one year of the notice, per IRS Publication 1660. An equivalent hearing does not stop collection.
Once served, a wage levy is continuous. You keep only an exempt amount set by IRS Publication 1494. For 2026, per Publication 1494 (Rev. 12-2025), a single filer paid weekly keeps $309.62 a week plus $101.92 for each dependent. So a single filer paid weekly with three dependents keeps $615.38 a week. Your employer gives you a statement of dependents and filing status to return within three days. If you do not return it, the IRS figures the exempt amount as married filing separately with no dependents, per IRS.gov. Bonuses paid separately can be taken in full. See our 2026 wage garnishment table for other filing statuses.
What to ask any firm
- Who will call the IRS, and what is their license: attorney, CPA or enrolled agent?
- What is the total fee, and is it flat or charged per phase?
- Could I release this levy myself with a payment plan or a hardship request?

Frequently asked questions
Everything above your exempt amount. Per IRS Publication 1494 (Rev. 12-2025), a single filer paid weekly keeps $309.62 plus $101.92 per dependent in 2026. The exempt amount depends on filing status, pay period and dependents, and it applies to take-home pay.
It depends on the IRS. The IRS must release a wage levy that causes immediate economic hardship. It also releases one when you enter an installment agreement whose terms do not allow the levy to continue. Some firms quote their own typical timelines, but those are self-reported, not IRS standards.
Often, yes. Call the number on the levy notice, explain your finances and ask for a payment plan or a hardship release. If you owe $50,000 or less and have filed all returns, you can apply for a payment plan online. The Taxpayer Advocate Service can help for free if the IRS is not resolving the problem.
You can still request an equivalent hearing within one year of the levy notice, per IRS Publication 1660. Unlike a timely Collection Due Process hearing, it does not stop the levy, and you cannot take Appeals’ decision to Tax Court.
No. After a free consultation, Global Gate quotes a flat fee upfront before work begins, and it does not add fees mid-case. Call 1-877-800-8180.
