IRS Tax Relief Guides

Best Tax Relief Companies in New York (2026)

Compare tax relief firms for New Yorkers: national IRS help plus NY-based attorneys for DTF tax warrants, income executions and license suspension.

Disclosure: this guide is published by Global Gate Tax Relief, which ranks itself first. The other firms are listed for comparison; we have no relationship with them.

Updated September 2026

For IRS problems, New Yorkers can use any qualified national firm, because federal collection works the same in every state. Global Gate Tax Relief handles these cases remotely. For New York State tax problems, you need a professional who handles NYS Department of Taxation and Finance (DTF) cases. That covers tax warrants, income executions and driver’s license suspension. The New York-based firms below each say on their sites that they do. If you owe both the IRS and New York State, you may need both kinds of help.

How we chose these firms

Criteria we checked on each firm’s own website on 23 September 2026:

  • Licensed representation: attorneys, CPAs or enrolled agents named on the site.
  • New York presence: a New York office address published on the firm’s site, for the NY-based firms.
  • Scope: whether the firm says it handles IRS matters, NYS DTF matters, or both.
  • Access and fees: free consultation or case review, and any fee disclosure.
  • Public record: no disciplinary, attorney general or FTC action found in our search.
  • Honesty: DTF’s own installment payment agreements and Taxpayer Rights Advocate are listed, because some readers need no paid help at all.

  8. NYS DTF payment plans and the Taxpayer Rights Advocate (free)

Best for: Smaller NYS balances you can resolve yourself

If you cannot pay a New York State tax bill in full, you can ask the DTF for an installment payment agreement (IPA). Per tax.ny.gov (read September 2026), you can request one online if the balance is $20,000 or less and needs no more than 36 monthly payments. Otherwise you call the department at 518-457-5434. The DTF says it may file a tax warrant as a condition of allowing an IPA.

If you have exhausted the normal channels, the Office of the Taxpayer Rights Advocate can take a fresh look at your case. You request help on Form DTF-911, and the phone number is 518-530-4357. The office says it cannot help with federal taxes. For IRS problems, the federal Taxpayer Advocate Service has offices in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Holtsville, Albany and Buffalo.

What New York State can do that the IRS does not

  • Tax warrant. A tax warrant is equivalent to a civil judgment. The DTF files it with the NYS Department of State and the county clerk, and it creates a lien on your real and personal property, per tax.ny.gov.
  • Income execution. This is New York’s wage garnishment. The DTF files a tax warrant first. You then have 20 days to make the first payment of 10% of your gross income, or 25% of your disposable earnings, from each paycheck, per tax.ny.gov. It ends only when the balance is paid in full.
  • Driver’s license suspension. If you have at least $10,000 in past-due tax personally assessed against you, the DTF may recommend suspending your New York license, per tax.ny.gov. You get 60 days’ notice, and you avoid suspension by paying in full or setting up an installment payment agreement. There are exemptions, for example commercial driver’s license holders and people whose wages are already being garnished.

How to choose

Work out first who is collecting: the IRS, New York State, or both. IRS final notices and levies are federal, so any qualified national firm can act on them. For DTF matters, choose a New York attorney, CPA or enrolled agent who says they handle warrants and income executions. Whoever you call, ask them to confirm this before you sign, and ask how fees are charged. Our questions to ask a tax relief company can help.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. IRS collection is federal and works the same in every state. Firms such as Global Gate Tax Relief represent New Yorkers remotely after you sign Form 2848, which authorizes them to deal with the IRS for you.
